Urban green spaces make up about 4% of the EU-27’s territory (ca 160,000 km²). Cities in regions where heatwaves are projected to increase by 20 or more days in 2041-2070 have 10 times more green space than cities where heatwaves are expected to rise by 1-5 days. Furthermore, access to green and blue spaces differs across Europe. Overall, cities in the north and west of Europe have more total green space within their area than cities in southern and eastern Europe (8).
The disparity in urban green spaces among EU countries facing more and more heatwaves is significant. In Malta, only 27% of the cities are covered by green surfaces, yet projections indicate over a week of additional heatwaves. Romanian cities have less than 50% green spaces but will face over two more weeks of heatwaves in the future. |
